Do you ever feel that the edge of your character or subject is to sharp and not fitting into your scene?

To create a soft edge around a character or subject in Photoshop using the Border Selection tool under Select and Modify, follow these steps:

    • Select the Subject:

      • Open your image in Photoshop.
      • Use any selection tool (e.g., Rectangular Marquee Tool, Lasso Tool, Quick Selection Tool) to make a rough selection around the subject you want to apply the soft edge to. Ensure the subject is adequately selected.
    • Refine the Selection:

      • Once you have a basic selection, go to Select in the top menu.
      • Choose Modify and then Expand from the dropdown menu.
      • In the dialog box that appears, enter a pixel value to expand the selection. This value will determine how wide the soft edge will be. Typically, values between 10 to 20 pixels work well for creating a soft edge.
    • Create the Soft Edge:

      • After expanding the selection, go back to Select > Modify.
      • This time, choose Feather from the dropdown menu.
      • In the Feather Radius dialog box, enter a value for how much you want to feather the edge of the selection. Feathering softens the transition between the selected and unselected areas. A good starting point is usually around 10 pixels, but adjust based on the resolution of your image and the effect you desire.
    • Apply the Soft Edge:

      • Once you've set the feather radius, click OK.
      • Your selection now has a soft, feathered edge around the subject.
    • Work with the Selection:

      • With the softened selection active, you can proceed to work on the subject, such as applying adjustments, adding effects, or copying it onto another background.
    • Refine as Needed:

      • If the soft edge isn't quite what you want, you can undo (Ctrl+Z / Cmd+Z) and adjust the Expand and Feather settings again until you achieve the desired result.
      •

By following these steps, you can effectively create a soft edge around a character or subject in Photoshop using the Border Selection tool under Select and Modify, enhancing the overall presentation of your digital artwork or design project.
