The Master's Palette - A Collection of Backgrounds & Textures Inspired by the Old Dutch Masters

Each background or texture can be used:

• As a full backdrop for your composition

• As a texture overlay to add depth and richness

• As a light effect by transforming the image creatively

 

✦ Tips for Use in Photoshop:

Here are a few ideas for how you can manipulate these textures to create unique effects:

 

➤ Create a Black & White Texture Overlay:

• Place the texture on a new layer above your artwork.

• Desaturate it: Image > Adjustments > Black & White (or simply press Shift + Ctrl + U).

• Set the blending mode to Overlay, Soft Light, or Multiply.

• Adjust the opacity to taste — this enhances the surface detail without overwhelming the composition.

➤ Enhance Texture and Contrast:

• Duplicate the texture layer.

• Use Image > Adjustments > Levels or Curves to deepen the shadows and brighten highlights.

• Set the enhanced layer to Overlay or Hard Light for dramatic texture impact.

 

➤ Create a Light Overlay from the Texture:

• Apply a Gaussian Blur: Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur 

• Set the blurred texture layer to Screen or Linear Dodge (Add) — this creates a soft light effect with painterly ambiance. Lower the oppacity if needed.

These textures are not static — they’re there to be played with, layered, stretched, blurred, or recolored to suit your creative voice.

COMMERCIAL USE LICENCE: The Commercial Use Licence (referred to as CU) grants you the freedom to utilise this product in any manner you desire. You are permitted to create personal projects as well as items for sale. This licence allows you to sell the items as part of an art project or image. For instance, designers can incorporate these items as they are or modfied (edited/manipulated) into collage/montage art, digital or analogue. The only restriction is that you are not authorised to resell the entire kit or individual elements in its original form, either for CU (Commercial Use) or PU (Personal Use).
