You can easily extend cropped portraits into full figures, or expand backgrounds to fit your composition using Generative Fill.

 

Here’s how:

• Select the Crop Tool and increase your canvas size to create extra space.

• Use the Lasso Tool or Rectangular Marquee Tool to select the empty area you want to fill or extend.

• Click Generative Fill in the Contextual Taskbar.

• Leave the prompt box blank for Photoshop to auto-extend naturally, or type a short cue like “extend clothing and legs” or “continue background texture.”

• Photoshop will generate several variations — choose the one that blends most naturally, or layer-mask for a custom blend.

💡 Pro tip: When extending portraits into full figures, use reference poses or shadow shapes to guide Photoshop’s generation — it helps it interpret your intent more accurately.
